Server Racks were originally built with round threaded or unthreaded holes for mounting equipment. Once cage nuts were developed, square holes became the preferred option as they allowed for fast and easy installation without tools.

Cage nuts are still used with threaded screw,however the screw attaches to a nut that is contained inside of a "cage" of sheet metal which is formed to easily attach to rails inside of server racks.

Clip nuts, rather than being pinched into place like cage nuts, are made to slide into position. This allows for easy installation or removal. Like cage nuts, they consist of a nut held in place inside a piece of formed sheet metal.
